Building Bamboo Fly Rods, a Video Introduction

Building bamboo fly rods can be both challenging and rewarding. Want to give it a try? Here are a few videos that show you what you may be in for. You can then decide whether you want to try it, or start saving for a nice Thomas & Thomas bamboo rod. There are also several books and fly fishing videos available today that go into more detail.

A How's It's Made video showing the making of a bamboo rod

I want to give a special thanks to the Discovery Channel for this video. It shows some of the tools and methods used by Thomas & Thomas. This video appears to be showing the making of the Hendrickson bamboo fly rod, which is one of their popular models. You don’t have to buy the expensive tools to build your own rod but the video is interesting all the same.

Building Your Own Fly Rod

But what if you want to build your own bamboo rod? Do you need the expensive tools? Not necessarily. These next three videos show you what you would be up against. This looks like a great winter project but I think I will save my dollars for one built by one of these craftsmen. I do however enjoy watching videos of craftsmen working in their home workshops using ingenious jigs and tools.

These videos come from Doug Moody at the Adirondack Folk School. I do hope they continue with more videos as they complete their project.

Part One: The hand splitting of the bamboo and sanding off the nodes.

Part Two: The hand planing of the bamboo.

Part Three: The heating of the bamboo in the oven.

OK, I may change my mind and give it a try someday, But for now I think I will go fishing.
